Zimmermann, Olympic gold medalist at Innsbruck’64 with biggest downhill advantage, dies
The Austrian Egon Zimmermann, was the Olympic downhill champion with the biggest difference between him and the second in the history of this discipline. He beat his rival, Leo Lacroix, by 74 hundredths of a second. He was Olympic downhill champion at the Insbruck 64 Games (Austria) and gold medalist in the Giant discipline, two years earlier at the World Cup held in Chamonix. Egon Zimmermann won with the biggest lead in history. He also beat Germany’s Wolfgang Bartels, bronze, by one second and three tenths, on the Patscherkofel track on the outskirts of the Tyrolean capital.
